AN UNUSUALLY MARKED 54-BORE PERCUSSION REVOLVER, MODEL 'KERR'S PATENT', serial no. 2105,
possibly from the Portuguese contract circa 1858, with blued 5 1/2in. semi-octagonal barrel, pillar fore-sight, the plain top-strap with notch rear-sight to top of standing breech and stamped with an anchor device within an oval bisecting the letters 'R.C.', plain five-shot cylinder, two-piece frame construction, chequered walnut grip with back-action lock inlet to the right hand side marked 'A.O.' within an oval, side hammer, lanyard ring at heel, single action trigger and hinged under-barrel loading lever, all parts marked with a small anchor stamp, the shaft bisected with a letter 'O', traces only of finish, grip worn
Other Notes: Little is known of the Portuguese contract Kerr revolvers. A.W.F. Taylerson states in his book 'The Revolver 1818-1865' that the late J.N. George had identified possible candidates, one marked as being made by the Orbea Brothers of Eibar, Spain, the other simply signed 'Fabrica De Duranco' and both were of inferior manufacture. He also states that Spanish made examples were known of equal manufacture, but this example bears an assembly number '163' prefixed with a letter 'C' in a circle suggesting possible London manufacture despite the absence of London proofs
